How to remember scientific names of organisms in biology easily?
Now that's a real challenge for all the biology students. These biological terms are derived from dead languages(which is no longer used) like Latin and Greek so that it cannot be changed as the time passes.
Now lets learn some simple method to remember this craps!
Now we all know that all scientific names consists of two words i.e., one GENERIC name and other SPECIFIC name.
Depending on that I've divided the Scientific names into three types:
I :The one with EASY Generic name but COMPLICATED Specific name
II :The one with COMPLICATED Generic name and EASY Specific name
III :The one with both the Generic and Specific name COMPLICATED
Now lets start !!!
I
The scientific names with easy Generic name means that the first word of the name is quite familiar with our common languages or sounds familiar to the words that we use in our daily life and quite easy to remember and COMPLICATED Specific means the second word is completely pissing you and you have to come up with something to remember it.
Now lets take a few examples:
-The scientific name of Crocodile is Crocodilia niloticus
The word Crocodila sounds similar to the word Crocodile and you can remember that easily and the word Niloticus is quit difficult. So lets think about the nature of the Crocodile when you had a visit to a Zoo. Its quite lazy, doesn't even move for few hours unlike other animals like Monkey that is very quick and TEASES YOU. So using this, divide the word Niloticus to 'Nil', 'Lot' ,'Tease' and 'Us' which means "It doesn't(NIL means Zero or nothing) teases us a lot". Now you can come up with this word by thinking about the Crocodile. Its quite simple you see!!
-The scientific name of Chameleon is Crocodilia niloticus
The word Chamaele sounds like Chamemeon , so that's not gonna be your problem.
But the word Ontidate the problem. Lets think about Chameleon for one sec, it changes its
color time to time. So lets again divide the word Ontidate to 'On', 'To' and 'Date' which
means "its changes its colour On to date "
But not all the SPECIFIC words scientific names cannot be divided to simpler. It all depends
on how many ways your mind thinks to divide these kinda words.
II
Here the second word is EASY to remember and the first word is DIFFICULT.
Now lets take examples
- The scientific name of the Tiger is Panthera tigris
The word Tigris is quite easy to remember as it sounds familiar to the word TIGER. But
the word Panthera is difficult to remember. but it sounds more like PANTHER which is
also a wild animan like Tiger . We know that Panther and tiger comes under same family and
their names are written together like FATHER AND SON.
That was one more easy step.
III
Here both the words are complicated and beat the shit out of you!
But lets not loose hope.
Now lets take example.
- The scientific name of Dog is Cannis familiaris
Both the words are quite difficult . Now we all know that Dogs have good and long teeth,
especially the canines. So remember canines for CANNIS.
We also know that the most people prefer dogs as pets and the make dogs as FAMILY
ANIMAL. So remember FAMILY for FAMILIARIS .
Now I hope that you got an idea about how to
remember these names easily
THANKS FOR READING :)
